The temptation of saint Anthony- Flaubert   Leave a comment

The Temptation of Saint Anthony is a book which the French author Gustave Flaubert spent his whole adult life working on.

In 1845, aged 24, Flaubert visited a Palace in Genoa, and was inspired by a painting byBruegel , which was titled the Temptation of Saint Anthony.

Anthony was a 3rd century mystic who lived in a cave in the Egyptian desert. The temptation is written in the form of a play script and takes place during one night when Anthony faced his greatest temptations.

At the beginning all of the demons, angels, monsters and all involved in the night of terrors and listed and described.

I found the book relatively easy to follow. Flaubert is famous for ‘Madame Bovary’ and this work is much less well known.

It is on the list of ‘1001 books to read before you die’.
